Boy Meets Boy
After discussing Boy Meets Boy in class on Wednesday, I learend a lot more about what Levithan was trying to get across in the story. People were saying how perfect this little community was of the differences and how accepting they were of people's choices. They were almost saying it was "too perfect" and "unrealistic." I liked this aspect of the story because, although i do agree that it was unrealistic, it is important to see that the point he was getting across was that when people are accepting of gay people, they are able to be themselves and function in society. Today's society is so much more open and accepting of the gay community, but not as much as it should be. The story had so many aspects that were pointing out people's lifestyle choices. I feel that his point was to show what the world would be like if everybody accepted each other and their choices. The best part about this book for me was the fact that Levithan did not focus on the fact that Paul was gay. It focused on the fact that he was facing the same issues and things that every other teenager getting into a relationship faces. It showed that just because it is a gay relationship, doesn't mean that their relationships are different. It pointed out the fact that they are the same and they face the same issues and go through the same things that everybody goes through. I found myself relating to the book because I know that I have been like that when I get into a new relationship. I found myself smiling when he was so excited meeting Noah and passing notes to him. I loved the aspect of their relationship. One thing that bothered me a lot about the book was, because i'm studying to become a teacher, the fact that Paul's kindergarten teacher wrote on his report card that he was definitely gay. I don't understand why any teacher would write that on a report card. When Paul asked what it meant, she siad it's when boys dont like girls adn he stated that at this age, nobody likes girls; they have cooties. She never explains it to him and it ends up confusing him. It just bothered me a lot the way that the kindergarten teacher went about the situation. I loved this book and my discussion group had a great talk about it.
